Malaysia Zoo welcomes baby elephant, African spoonbill

M Update 24/1/2019 – The Taiping Zoo & Night Safari welcomed the birth of a male elephant and the hatching of an African Spoonbill wading bird last Dec 30. Both are very significant to the zoo as the last time the wading bird hatched was in 2003 while the last elephant calf was born in 2011.

The yet to-be-named baby elephant is currently with his mother and live separately from other members of the group before being released. Meanwhile, the hatching of the African Spoonbill bird weighing 50 grams, brought the number of the species in the zoo to three. As for now, the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari has seven male elephants and two female elephants.

Besides that, the Zoo Taiping also accept four other species purchased from licensed companies as part of its effort to attract more visitors to come. According to Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) president Datuk Abdul Rahim Md Ariff said with these new additions and new species, this is mean the Taiping Zoo & Night Safari now has over 1,400 animals from 140 species.
