YAN: A jobless man and drug addict has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with an attack that caused the death of a two-year-old male toddler and his five-year-old sister, and serious injury to a 52-year-old villager in Kampung Tengah, Kuala Sungai Yan on Jan 8, at the Yan Magistrate Court here.
The accused, Amir Ariffin, 49, a jobless man and drug addict from the village, was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, as well as under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievious hurt to a villager with a sword.
He arrived at Yan Magistrate Court in a white police van and was led straight to the lock-up to wait for proceedings to begin.
The accused, who was clad in a red, round-collar T-shirt, was brought before Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Alit and the charges were read out.
On the first charge, he was accused of voluntarily causing grievious hurt to Soberi Saad, 52, with a sword between the hours of 11.00pm and midnight Jan – an offence liable for imprisonment for a term up to to 20 years, as well as a fine and whipping.
He claimed trial to the offence.
On the second charge, he was accused of murdering Nurul Hanim Idris, five, with a sword at the same time and place.
According to the third charge, he was also accused of murdering two-year-old Muhammad Hafis Idris.
He nodded to show that he understood the content of the three charges, but no pleas were recorded in relation to the latter two charges
Amir had earlier been remanded under Section 117 of Criminal Prosedure Code for seven days by Gurun Magistrate Court from Jan 9 to Jan 15.
The judge did not grant bail to the accused.
She set Mac 18 for mention of the case.
