M Update 18/1/2019 – Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin has urged the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the local councils in the country to educate the public on responsible pet ownership.
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, who is the royal patron of SPCA Selangor’s Stray Free Campaign, hoped the authorities would take proactive measures in promoting the concept of ‘Caring and Compassionate Communities’.
She said this would include promoting initiatives to spay or neuter and also building shelters for unwanted animals that were healthy and not aggressive.
She also urged the authorities to work with NGOs and concerned members of the society to work in eradicating any cruelty towards animals.
“I appeal to all Malaysians to have compassion and love for these unwanted strays who are not capable of defending themselves,”
Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin said she was both relieved and satisfied that the Selayang Sessions Court on imposed a two-year jail sentence on the wrongdoers who killed a pregnant cat by putting it into a dryer at a launderette in September last year.
CCTV recordings showed two men putting the cat in the dryer before turning it on. This act was heavily condemned by social media users, who called the authorities to take stern action against them.
“I still feel grief and sadness because there are other incidences of cruelty towards animals including a kitten that was stepped on until it died and the case of poisoning and burning dogs,” she said.
Under The Animal Welfare Bill 2015, animal abusers can face a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000 and a jail sentence of not more than three years if convicted.
