M Update, 11/4/2019 – Six students were injured when the school van they were travelling in collided with a pickup truck and lorry at Mile 22, Jalan Apas here, on Thursday. One of the students suffered a severe facial wound which required 18 stitches. The incident occurred at 5.50pm as the van was ferrying eight Form 1 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Wakuba to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Balung here.
It is understood that the van driver, who was attempting to overtake a three-tonne Isuzu lorry, made a sudden move into the right lane, which caused a Toyota Hilux behind it to rear-end the vehicle.
The van was propelled forward by the impact and collided into the rear of the lorry. Six students on the van were injured. The drivers of the van, pickup truck and lorry escaped unhurt, however.
An initial investigation revealed that the accident was caused by the school van driver’s dangerous, careless move,” acting Tawau police chief Superintendent Nor Azizulkifli Mansor said in a statement today. He added that all victims received outpatient treatment at the Tawau General Hospital; and that the case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) (A) of the Road Transport Act 1987. – NST Online
