Chemical leak at Semenyih factory

M Update, 12/2/2019 – A hazardous chemical leak was detected at a factory in Kampung Sungai Lalang, near Semenyih, on Monday night. It is learnt that 10 tanks of ethylene chloride, stored outside the factory, had suffered breaches and were found to be leaking the toxic chemical, Bernama reported.

Ethylene chloride is highly flammable and exposure to the chemical can cause serious eye and skin irritation, as well as dizziness and respiratory irritation.

Semenyih Fire and Rescue station head Zainal Elias Abdul Aziz said they received an emergency call at 10pm, and eight officers and personnel from the Hazardous Material (Hazmat) unit were rushed to the site.

“(We found) about 50 tanks believed to contain ethylene chloride outside the factory, which is located in an open area. Following an inspection we (found that 10 of the tanks were leaking), causing the chemical to spill,” he told Bernama. The cleaning work at the factory is ongoing, and that there has been no casualty in the incident.”
